About Fernando Pessoa

Fernando Pessoa is considered the greatest Portuguese Poet and also one of the greatest of the 20th Century.

Pessoa started to write in English and his poetic production in this language his vast.

He was a bilingual, bicultural and heteronymic poet and a central figure of Modern Literature.In Portuguese, he wrote under his own name and under his heteronymcs: Alberto Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis and Bernardo Soares.

Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon in 1888.
When he was seven and his mother remarried to the Portuguese Consul appointed to South Africa e moved to live in Durban. As a consequence he was first of all an english poet.
Only when, at the age of seventeen, he returned to Lisbon he started to write poetry in Portuguese.
